Answers for the most asked inquiries
Gown ShoppingWhen should I start shopping for my wedding gown?
We recommend starting your search about one year prior to your wedding. This is a big purchase, and your dress is the star of your wedding, so don't put it off! Start by looking at different styles in magazines and online and envision what type of gown suits your personality, ceremony location, and your personal style. You should start setting up appointments 9-12 months before your wedding. You might get lucky and find the gown of your dreams available to take home with you, but if you end up special ordering your gown that adds considerable time to your gown arriving. You also need to factor in the time needed for alterations if your gown doesn’t fit you perfectly.
Can I try on wedding gowns without an appointment?
While we will not turn away walk-ins, please understand that our first priority is to clients with appointments. If we are busy when you arrive, we may not be able to give you our highest level of service at that given moment. If you happen to be in the area and wish to browse our store to get a feel for our selection, please do so, and then make an appointment and get the royal treatment you deserve. Our top priority is your satisfaction and we want you to walk out with the gown of your dreams that makes you look your best.
May I bring children with me on my visit?
We love children! However, we encourage you not bring children to a bridal store if possible. Choosing your wedding gown is one of the most important decisions you will make for your wedding. For the rest of your married life you will be looking at pictures of yourself in that special gown. When shopping for that gown you need to be able to focus and concentrate without distraction. A bridal salon is not a fun place for kids and they will get bored very quickly, and can distract you from this important mission. A bridal salon is also NOT a safe place for children due to loose pins, breakable items and other hazards. Children may also distract other future brides on this important day
Who Should I bring with me when gown shopping?
When shopping for a wedding gown, all the experts advise not to bring too many people. Your mom and one or two other trusted individuals seem to be the perfect mix. We have seen that too many people can often confuse the bride because everyone has different tastes. Picking only a few people who love you to come and your experience will be a lot more enjoyable. You will have a better chance of being successful in your quest. It is great to have one or two people who are close to you to give you honest opinions, but bringing too many people to “poll the audience” is a recipe for disaster that may make you miss out on your perfect gown. In the end, the only opinion that truly counts when picking a wedding gown is YOURS! You will be the center of attention at your wedding. You want a wedding gown that will make you look awesome and feel amazing. You are the only one who will really know when you have found the gown that accomplishes this.
Can I bring in pictures of gowns I like?
Definitely! But first, we advise that you remember two things: first, the models used by bridal designers average 6' tall and a size 4, so the gowns may not look the same on all body types. You will definitely want to see yourself in the gown in your size before you buy it. Second, you should know that many designers sell gowns not advertised in magazines and are not available online, so keep an open mind when you shop. We are able to help select gowns for you to try on that will flatter your figure, match your style and budget requirements, even if it was not the exact gown from a picture. Countless brides have come to us with a picture of a certain gown, and have left purchasing an entirely different gown - all because their bridal consultant worked to find the gown that made them FEEL perfect. If we don't have the exact gown you are looking for, we almost always have one that is very similar.
What sizE dresses do you carry?
You will find gowns between sizes 2 through 30, with a higher concentration around sizes 14-16 and 22-24. If a gown you like is too small or too big, we can usually clip the dress to give you a better idea of what the gown will look like in your size. Please understand that we are a family owned bridal boutique and not a national department store, and it is impossible to stock every gown in every size and color. Also note that most bridal gowns are sized differently than street wear. Depending on the designer, a person who usually wears a size 8 dress will require a size 10 or 12 in a bridal gown. Don't get hung up on the numbers. Trust your consultant to pull the right size gown for you. Never buy a smaller size because you intend to lose weight. Generally, alterations cannot increase the size of the gown but they can make a loose gown fit perfectly.
Will I see gowns that I haven't seen everywhere else?
Definitely! Many of our designers are not carried at any other salon in Raleigh. We pride ourselves on our unique and beautiful selection. We specifically choose designers that have closed markets and will not sell their dresses to every store in the area. To you, it means you won't be wearing a dress that looks like every other wedding you have been to. Your dress will be yours. We also carry many one of a kind gowns, and have often acquired 'concept' dresses - these are designs made for the upcoming season which didn't make the cut (often because they were too expensive!).
What about gowns for encore brides, second weddings, re-affirming vows?
Almost 20% of the brides we see are looking for this type of gown. These women tell us… I don’t want to look like a 20 year old or be covered with beads and sequins, but I do want to look special and beautiful so that when my fiancée sees me he will say “thank God I got her.” With this many clients coming in for encore weddings, A Bridal World is ready. You'll find an extensive selection of 'informal' wedding gowns that are often less ornate and easy wearing, with a little sweep train or none at all. Will it be a traditional, simple, or a grand gown for your event? It's up to you.
What about destination weddings or pregnant brides?
Not a week goes by when we don’t have several requests in this category. You'll find plenty of selections to choose from for your beach and destination event – a truly awesome variety of wedding gowns designed to be free flowing, elegant, sexy and exciting for just this type of wedding. As for pregnant brides, not only do we have great choices of gowns that will accommodate this special need, but we have the experienced consultants that will be able to guide you to a beautiful dress that will truly enhance your special day.
Will I be able to browse the racks myself and pick out gowns?
A Bridal World has 'closed stock.' This means that most of the gowns are stored in our gown vault and brought out for you to try on. We consult with you first, to see what styles you desire, the color, size and price range; then your consultant selects gowns that most closely match your wedding dreams. All of the gowns are protected in see-through bags, which prevent damage by rubbing or snagging on other dresses. Before trying on gowns you will be asked to remove all jewelry, which can snag on the materials. You will be given wipes to clean your hands, and a disposable make-up mask to put on (to keep makeup where it's supposed to be). Your consultant will open the bridal bags and put the wedding gowns on you. Such pampering! We do take special care to make sure every gown stays in perfect condition, and you will appreciate this care when you find the most amazing dress to fall in love with.
Do you have one of every dress in your store from every designer you carry?
Unlike a department store, we are unable carry every gown a designer carries, in every size and every color. One of our designers alone creates up to 75 wedding gowns per season! (There are two seasons per year, spring and fall.) If we are an authorized retailer for a designer you like, and we do not have the gown you desire in stock, we are certainly able to order it for you.
What are sample gowns?
Many bridal salons operate by having you try on gowns that are in the salon, to see which style you like. They don't let you purchase the gowns already in the store; instead, you place an order and have another gown made for you. These 'sample' dresses are often sizes 8 - 10, which doesn't accommodate very many brides. Technically, no store has 'sample gowns.' Every gown a store has in stock must be paid for, at full price, in order for the store to receive it from the designer. They are not free. And because they stay at the store longer than a dress for sale would, they tend to get 'shopworn.' At A Bridal World, we do not stock 'sample gowns.' Each and very gown is available for you to own and take home today. Select gowns are also available for you to order in your size and color.
How many gowns can I (or should I) try on?
We usually recommend trying on no more than about 6 gowns. Believe it or not, trying on too many gowns and having too many choices causes confusion, and makes the process of selecting your gown more difficult. Your consultant will select 3 gowns to try on, based on your preferences. If these dresses aren't "the one," your consultant will have a better idea of what gown looks best on you and may recommend certain styles for you. Our staff knows which silhouettes flatter your shape, and often a gown that may not look so flattering hanging in a bag may be the most fantastic dress of all!
How much time do I have to try on Gowns?
We allot 1½ hour for each appointment during weekdays. Weekday appointments are more relaxed because the salon is not so busy, and we can devote more time to you. Due to the volume of brides on Saturdays, our Saturday appointments are 1 hour. All walk-ins are 1 hour. You will have a dressing room and your consultant’s attention during that hour. An hour appointment is usually enough time to view our collections on the sales floor, try on dresses, and discuss pricing and options.
There are a few things we ask of you:
How will I remember the gowns I tried on?
Before your appointment begins, you'll be asked to fill out your client registration form. After your consultation, your bridal consultant will write down the dresses you liked, including any accessories. From this point on, your file will be kept safe so if your consultant is not available at your next visit, another consultant can view your file and know exactly which dresses you tried on and comments you’ve made.
Can I take photos of the gowns I like in your store?
Regrettably, due to copyright laws, in order to protect the integrity of the manufacturer's designs, photos are not permitted. This is a common policy among bridal boutiques. It is not meant to inconvenience anyone – we realize that you want to show pictures to out of town moms and friends. Due to the rise in internet fraud of copies being sold as originals, we are unable to allow photos to be taken inside our showroom. We have contracts with our designers that as authorized retailers, we honor and uphold the integrity of their designs.
For these reasons, we ask that you also honor the privacy of others and leave your cameras and recording devices of any kind in your vehicle during your visit. Once you own the gown, you may take as many pictures of your gown as you’d like. What if I find the gown of my dreams and I'm not ready to buy it yet?
(I'm not ready financially, or I want my mom to see it.) By leaving your visit without purchasing the dress you love, you risk a few things. The dress may be sold off the rack, and you will not have the opportunity to show your mother later the dress you fell in love with. Another risk is that a gown may be discontinued by a designer and unable to be reordered. In that case the only dress available will be the one in the store, and once it's sold, it's no longer an option.
We suggest that before you set an appointment you ask yourself, "If I found the wedding gown of my dreams in my budget can I buy it today?" It's best to be ready at A Bridal World by bringing your mom or that important person with you so if you find that perfect dress you won't have to leave it behind. We do have payment options where a deposit can have the dress ordered or held off the rack. How is A Bridal World different from the big box chain bridal stores?
There are two BIG differences.
First, although both A Bridal World and the chain stores stock wedding gowns, the big box stores manufacture their own dresses at their factory. At A Bridal World, we do not make wedding gowns. Therefore, we are not limited to a select group of dresses. We are able to travel the country, attending bridal markets in Chicago, New York, and Atlanta in search of the latest gowns that cater to a variety of different tastes. The second difference is that the chain stores have "fixed" styles for the season. This means that for the most part their dress styles do not change during the year. They can give you a catalog because the same dresses are being sold at hundreds of locations nationwide and there is nothing unique about any of them. At A Bridal World, our inventory is constantly changing as we receive new dresses on a weekly basis. The only disadvantage of is that if you do find your perfect wedding gown and don’t purchase it, there is a good chance it won’t be here when you come back and you’ll have to start over in your quest for the perfect wedding gown. A customer recently told us that she went to a wedding where 2 brides were in the exact same dress at receptions across the hall from each other! The bride was mortified that she bought her dress at a huge chain type store. Not to mention people tell us everyday that they just "felt like a number" at the chains and superstores. One of the biggest differences at our store are the unique styles of high quality gowns that we offer and our committed level of service to our brides Our philosophy is to provide an atmosphere where people feel as though they are truly treated like family. We make recommendations based solely on your needs and desires. Simply stated, we hear stories every day about how people are mistreated in Triangle bridal stores and we go out of our way to be the absolute best bridal experience for each guest. Chain stores may have similar gowns; should I check them out first?
We have found from experience that while the styles are similar, the quality, the workmanship and the materials will not be. Also, some chain stores may not special order a gown that you want. When they say they are "ordering" your gown, they may very well be having an in-stock gown from another store sent to their location (yes, this happens). So you may get an in-stock gown that has been tried on by many, many customers. Our store and associates can offer you a better product and better service at a comparable price.
General Bridal QuestionsCan I get a catalog of the wedding gowns you carry?
Sorry, it’s impossible for A Bridal World to publish a catalog. This is because our styles & the wedding gowns we have available change daily. Most other bridal stores carry the same styles for an entire season or longer so it’s easy for them to publish a catalog. A Bridal World carries a very exclusive collection of gowns that are not available anywhere else in the area. A gown that is in the store today will probably not be here next week.
Do you rent wedding gowns?
No, we do not rent wedding gowns. We’ve found that the average price for renting a wedding gown is between $299 and $499. For that price you can certainly find a bridal gown of your very own from A Bridal World.
Do you require an appointment to try on gowns?
We prefer our bridal clients to have an appointment so we can provide them with the exquisite customer service our reputation demands. We like to treat each of our guests with one-on-one personal service and devote our full attention to helping our customers find the perfect bridal gown and help them make informed decisions when it comes to style, fit and cost. Making an appointment will insure that our consultants are properly prepared and staffed to meet your needs. Also we discourage people from buying off-the-rack without proper consultation, as sizes vary greatly between each designer and often there is no return option available. Above all, selecting a wedding gown should be all about you and the excellent service that you deserve! We do accommodate walk-ins, but appointments are given top preference. Appointments are required on Saturdays during peak bridal and prom season. Make an appointment today by calling (919) U.S.BRIDE.
Are there other colors I could wear besides white and still look & feel like a bride?
Lately many brides are incorporating color into their gowns. You can have colorful embroidery, a color band, or simply add a colorful sash. You also do not have to wear a white gown. Despite the age-old montage that brides always wear white, shades of ivory are actually much more flattering to most skin tones. Most designers offer different shades of white, diamond white, ivory, and champagne, and beautiful shades of red and gold are increasingly popular. We have a selection of gowns available with color options, where the gown can be customized to have the color accent of your choic
What do I do with my gown after the wedding?
You have the option to have your gown cleaned and preserved. However, more brides are realizing a benefit to having their dress cleaned, and then re-selling it soon after so the gown may create another happy marriage. This option offers you the chance of recouping some of the costs of your wedding gown purchase. We suggest choosing consignment shop services for this purpose, where you will get paid once your dress sells.
I want to keep my wedding gown. How should I store my gown after the wedding?
You should have your dress dry cleaned as soon after the wedding as possible. Gowns will usually have: makeup, body oils and perspiration stains on the bodice, grass and/or dirt stains on the hem and train, and sugar stains throughout (often from spilled champagne). Some stains will not show up for months, thus making it seem the gown does not need a cleaning. A regular dry cleaning vs. heirlooming cleaning is all that is needed. The dress then needs to be inspected by you to be sure all stains were removed. Then gently fold and store in a box away from heat, light and moisture. Wrapping your gown with something blue, such as a towel, blue plastic or acid-free tissue paper, will help prevent discoloration. This will preserve your wedding gown in heirloom quality.
BridesmaidsShould I look for my gown and mY bridesmaids gowns on the same day?
Don't try to do too much in one day. We suggest you not try to shop for bridesmaids and a wedding gown all in the same day. Finding that perfect gown can be harder, more time consuming, and more mentally exhausting than you think. We suggest you focus on your wedding gown first, check out our entire selection of bridesmaids before you leave, and plan a separate day for the bridesmaids shopping.
When should I shop for bridesmaids gowns? who should I bring?
Almost every bridal expert today advises future brides to pick the bridesmaids dresses WITHOUT the input of their bridal party. Why? Because the experts feel that it’s your wedding, and you have a vision of the look and feel you want for it. Every maid, no matter how good a friend, will have her own agenda, and it will be hard for you not only to accommodate each maid’s preferences but also to achieve the look you had envisioned as well. Our bridesmaids inventory consists of one dress per style, so unless you have a party of one or two maids the gowns will need to be ordered. Although we have some styles that are available in as little as 3 weeks, the majority can take up to 16 week (four months) to arrive. You'll want your girls to have their dresses at least a month prior to your ceremony, for any alterations needed and for your peace of mind. Some of our lines offer rush options for faster turnaround times, but this option also incurs additional fees. Therefore, we recommend that bridesmaids be ordered four to five months before the wedding if possible.
What colors and style choices do I have for bridesmaids dresses?
Each group we carry has their own set of color swatches for that particular material. When looking at bridesmaids dresses, look at the styles and silhouettes of each gown, and don’t focus so much on the colors they are shown in. Every dress can be ordered from a selection of about 20 to 40 colors for that particular manufacturer. Some gowns even have multiple color options so you can incorporate more of your wedding colors into the dress. Find the style you like, and then ask your consultant to show you the colors that dress is available in. Some bridesmaids groups even have additional choices, such as the length of the gown, the material it's made of, and whether you want a zipper back or a lace-up back. Your consultant will let you know what your options are for the styles you choose.
What if some of my maids live far away?
In this day and age with such a mobile society it is common for some of your maids to live far away. This is not a problem AT ALL. It is highly suggested that if at all possible, your entire bridal party should be ordered at the same time on the same order. Why? The factory will try to cut all the dresses from the same order on the same bolt of fabric, which is best to avoid slight color variations. Color variations can happen if the dresses are cut from different bolts of fabric, where the dye may not be 100% the same (the may be off by a shade or two). Even if your party orders in the same time period, but from different stores, they will not be on the same order and will most likely be cut at different times or from different bolts. We can certainly accommodate your out of town maids. We will just need 3 measurements, which are best when taken by a professional seamstress to ensure a correct fit.
When do I need to order my maids dresses?
Bridesmaid dresses don’t usually take as long to order as bridal gowns, but because they are also made to order, we generally advise ordering them 4 to 5 months before your wedding. Keep in mind that it might be difficult to coordinate all the bridesmaids to place their orders in a timely matter, especially if you have a large party. Starting the process early will ensure that by the time the last bridesmaid’s order is receive, there is still sufficient time for the dresses to come in without having to pay rush fees. Please note our policy that bridesmaid orders are placed at the same time, once all deposits are in, so that the dresses are cut from the same roll of fabric, thus preventing dye lot variations.
Can I still get bridesmaids gowns if my event is less than three months away?
Yes – A Bridal World can place order on rush cuts on select gowns if the designer offers that service. Many of our designers will accommodate a rush order for an additional fee of 15-20% of the price of the dress. Rush fees are different than shipping fees – a rush cut puts the production of your gown higher up in the manufacturer’s queue of gown orders, rather than adding it at the very end. Rush times and fees vary from designer to designer. We also have designers that offer as little as 3 week delivery on select gowns; your consultant will discuss the options available to you.

A Bridal World carries a very exclusive collection of prom gowns that are not available anywhere else in the area. A gown that is in the store today will probably not be here next week.
Can you tell me if a certain gown is in stock?
As much as we'd love to have every gown in our inventory memorized, it's impossible! We literally have thousands of gowns in our store. We also have a personalized inventory system that does not correspond to the designer’s style numbers, so we are unable to look them up on our computers. The best answer to that question is simply to make an appointment to view our inventory.
Do you rent prom gowns?
No, we do not rent prom gowns. All of the gowns are here for you to purchase and own.
Are these dresses used?
All the gowns and products we offer are brand new. We do not accept or offer items for resale. You can visit our sister store, Around Again Consignments (located next to us) to see if they have any pre-owned selections available.
Do you buy gowns from the public?
We do not purchase used or new gowns from the general public. If you're looking to sell your gown, we recommend ARound Again Consignments. Please see their website for all the details.
When should I start shopping for my prom gown?
We recommend starting your search as early as December. Start by looking at different styles in magazines and online and envision what type of gown suits your personality and style. Starting mid-December, prom gowns start arriving weekly at A Bridal World. If you have your heart set on a particular style and we don’t have it in stock, you should plan on ordering it up to 14 weeks (3½ months) before your prom night.
Can I try on gowns without an appointment?
While we will not turn away walk-ins, please understand that our first priority is to clients with appointments. If we are busy when you arrive, we may not be able to give you our highest level of service at that given moment. If you happen to be in the area and wish to browse our store to get a feel for our selection, please do so; after that you can make an appointment to return and get the royal treatment you deserve. Can I bring in pictures of gowns I like?
Definitely! But we strongly advise that you remember two things. First, the models used by the bridal designers average 6' tall and a size 4, so the gowns may not look the same on you. You will definitely want to see yourself in a gown in your size before you buy it. The second thing you should know is that many designers sell gowns that are not advertised in the magazines and are not available online, so keep an open mind when you are shopping. We will be able to help select gowns for you to try on that will flatter your figure, match your style and budget requirements, even if it was not the exact gown in the photo. There have been countless girls that have come in with a picture of a certain gown that have left purchasing an entirely different gown - all because their consultant worked to find the gown that made them FEEL beautiful. If we don't have the exact gown you are looking for, we almost always have one that is very similar.
Do you have one of every dress in your store from every designer you carry?
Unlike a department store, we cannot and do not stock every gown a designer carries in every size and every color. One of our designers alone creates up to 150 prom gowns per season! If we are an authorized retailer for a designer you like, and we do not have the gown you desire in stock, we are certainly able to order it for you. Just remember that you need to order it several weeks in advance.
What sizes do you carry for prom gowns?
Our prom gowns are between size 0 and size 30, with a higher concentration around sizes 2 – 6 and 12 – 16. If a gown you like is too small or too big, we can usually clip you to give you a general idea of what the gown will look like in your size. Please be understanding that since we are a boutique and not a department store, it is impossible for us to stock each gown in every size and color. Also, please note that most prom gowns are sized differently than street wear. Depending on the designer, a person who usually wears a size 8 dress, will require a size 10 or 12 in a prom gown. It feels insulting but don't get hung up on the numbers. If the gown fits right, the numbers mean nothing. Trust your consultant to pull the right size gown for you. Never buy a smaller size because you intend to lose weight. Generally, alterations cannot increase the size of the gown, they can, however, make a loose gown fit perfectly.
Will I be able to find gowns at A Bridal World that i haven't seen everywhere else?
Definitely! Many of our designers are not carried at any other salon in the Triangle. We pride ourselves on our unique and beautiful selection. We specifically choose designers that have closed markets and will not sell their dresses to every store in the area. We are often privileged to offer One-Of-A-Kind Gowns, gowns that only exist in our salon. To you, it means you won't be wearing a dress that looks like every other wedding you have been to. Your dress will be yours.

The dress may be sold off the rack, and you will not have the opportunity to show your mother later the dress you fell in love with. You would not believe how desirable a dress becomes when another girl sees how stunning the dress looked on you! Another risk is that a gown may be discontinued by a designer and become unable to be reordered. In that case the only dress available will be the one in the store, and once it's sold, it's no longer an option.
We suggest that before you visit our store you ask yourself, "If I found the prom gown of my dreams in my budget can I buy it today?" It's best to be ready at A Bridal World by bringing your mom or whoever you want with you so if you find that perfect dress you won't have to leave it behind. We do have payment options where a deposit can have the dress ordered or held off the rack. How is A Bridal World different from the big box chain bridal stores?
There are Five BIG differences.
1 – VARIETY. Although both A Bridal World and the department stores stock prom gowns, the department stores all carry similar dresses, and many duplicates of the exact same style and color. At A Bridal World, we are not limited to only a few prom gown designers; therefore, we are not limited to a small number of dress styles. We are able to travel the country, attending bridal markets in Chicago, New York, and Atlanta in search of the latest gowns that cater to a variety of different tastes and price points. 2 – SELECTION. department stores have "fixed" styles for the season. At A Bridal World, our inventory is constantly changing as we receive new dresses on a weekly basis. The only disadvantage of is that if you do find the perfect prom gown and don’t purchase it, there is a good chance it won’t be here when you come back and you’ll have to start over in your quest for the perfect gown. 3 – REGISTRY. A Bridal World will not sell the same exact dress in the same color to another girl at your prom. We keep a registry of all prom gowns sold, so you can check and make sure your gown won’t show up on another girl who also shopped at A Bridal World. Department stores cannot uphold this same promise to you; the possibility of seeing a duplicate dress is much higher, which nobody wants the embarrassment of. 4 – ORDERING. difference from department stores is that department stores have a set number of styles and sizes they order for each store for the season. They don’t have the flexibility to accommodate factory ordering if they don’t have the gown you want – what you see is what you get. As an authorized retailer for select designers, A Bridal World has the ability to order the gown you desire in a different size, or in another available color choice. 5 – QUALITY. The difference is not only in the quality of the gowns we offer, but in the pristine condition you will find our gowns in. Department stores stock their prom gowns on tightly packed racks, with nothing to separate the gowns between another. In a short amount of time they can become “shop worn,” with snags, missing beads, broken zippers, and stretched seams from trying on sizes too small. You can try on gowns without any assistance in department stores, which may seem like a good idea; but you are given no guidance or advice about which size to select, what silhouette will make you look fantastic, or how to wear intricate designs. Department stores do not attempt to fix gowns prior to selling, and no one wants to wear a gown that looks like it’s been worn or damaged. At A Bridal World, we bag every gown, which ensures gowns stay in their best possible condition. We assist you in selecting gowns that flatter your figure, and we’ll help you figure out intricate or complicated styles, which will ensure your gown looks its very best on your prom night. Where should I purchase my gown?
Where you buy your gown is important... both for the experience and financial stability matter. Ask as many past prom girls as you can about what stores they visited and how they were treated. You'll get a good idea as to which salons will go the extra mile to meet your needs. In this day and age of stores closing their doors without giving girls their dress or a refund, it’s important to find a sound, dependable store that delivers on what they promise.
A Bridal World is a convenient one-stop shop for you, offering prom gowns, undergarments, jewelry, hair pieces, and shoes. Every dress that leaves our store is steamed, a $40 value. Can I see this gown in another color?
prom season , and the colors & prints change so often, if a gown is available in other colors, it may be a little difficult to obtain pictures or swatches of all the colors offered. Some designers will include color swatches with our in-house gowns to show you the alternate color options available. Others may show the alternate colors in their catalogs. Some may have no swatches available at all. In that case, the best we can do is get a description of the other colors. Because of the sheer volume of gowns made by each designer, and the amount of designers we stock each prom season, we are unable to carry one of each style in each color available.
Can I try on gowns in your store before i buy it off the internet?
Unfortunately, no, if you don’t plan on purchasing your gown from us. Although independent bridal stores do carry national brands, each store is there to provide you with gown selections to choose from and purchase. We get nothing from the gown manufacturer if you come in and try a gown, and we get nothing if you then decide to purchase from an online store.
98% of bridal stores in the USA are independently owned and operated, and are not chain stores like David’s Bridal or Alfred Angelo. We encourage you to support your local businesses, where you can interact with a knowledgeable consultant, see and try on dresses that were made to flatter you (and not a size 2 model), get your consultant’s expert advise about styles, fit and accessorizing, and not have to deal with the uncertainty of delivery with an online store. Why shouldn't i just buy my gown off the internet?
We strongly discourage buying any gown off the Internet. Often, these gowns are cheap "knock-offs" of the gowns they claim to be selling you. When it arrives, you may be very disappointed with the gown or its quality, as most knock-offs use cheaper, lower quality materials to make a dress, and you will get stuck with a gown you will never wear. And, if a site is an authorized retailer they may not be for long. Our manufacturers are actively working to close the accounts of any store selling on the Internet. If they close the account, your order may not be filled. We’ve encountered many girls in tears over what they thought would be their beautiful gown, but got ripped off from an unscrupulous vendor, whether it was bought off eBay, an Internet store, or from China knock-offs.
In a recent article in USA Today, it was reported that shoppers were getting a poor deal from Internet retailers. The Consumers International research group ordered 151 items from various Internet sites. It found that one in ten items never arrived. Your prom gown is too important to take a chance on. Even though the idea of purchasing from an e-store can seem easy and cheap, buyer beware. Internet prices may seem enticing, but you will find if an offer sounds too good to be true, it usually is. In recent comparison shopping we found many gowns on several sites were priced 10% – 20% higher than the gowns in A Bridal World. And these were on ‘discount’ websites! So again, buyer beware. Please also be aware of designer gowns for sale on the internet. 9 times out of 10 these “designers” are copies and are of poor quality. If there was ever a time when you deserve quality, it’s your prom night. By purchasing from a bridal salon, you have the luxury of trying on several styles, getting assistance in choosing your size and having your questions answered immediately. The Internet is an invaluable shopping tool, but for the real thing, only buy something as important as your prom gown from an authorized retailer. Orders & PurchasesWhere should I purchase my gown?
Where you buy your gown is important . . . experience and financial stability matter. Ask past brides or prom girls as you can about what stores they visited and how they were treated. You'll get a good idea as to which salons will go the extra mile to meet your needs. In this day and age of stores closing their doors without giving patrons their dress or a refund, it’s important to find a sound, dependable store that delivers on what they promise.
A Bridal World is a convenient one-stop shop for the bride, her bridal party, prom girls and more, offering dresses, undergarments, jewelry, veils, headpieces, and shoes. Every dress that leaves our store is steamed, a $60.00 value. We also offer incentives to brides who purchase their wedding gown from us. Please see your bridal consultant about our offers available and the details. When do I need to order my gown?
Each designer has a different lead-time for production of your order. We will work with you to determine order and delivery deadlines for items you have selected. We generally recommend ordering your gown at least 9 months before your wedding. It typically takes about 4 to 6 months from the time of ordering for your gown to arrive. Gowns with custom changes may take longer. You will want to leave 2 to 3 months of buffer time for alterations and possible shipping delays.
Why does it take so long for a dress to be made? Because most gowns are constructed after the designer receives an order. They may receive hundreds of orders daily from bridal stores all over the country; each order is placed next in the queue, to be made in the order they were received. Can I still get a gown if my event is less than 3 months away?
Yes – A Bridal World can place order on rush cuts on select gowns if the designer offers that service. Many of our designers will accommodate a rush order for an additional fee of 15-20% of the price of the dress. Rush fees are different than shipping fees – a rush cut puts the production of your gown higher up in the manufacturer’s queue of gown orders, rather than adding it at the very end. Rush times and fees vary from designer to designer. We also have designers that offer as little as 3 week delivery on select gowns; your consultant will discuss the options available to you.
If you do not wish to pay rush charges on a particular gown, we always welcome you to purchase one of our beautiful in-stock gowns that are not subject to rush charges. Our in-stock gowns are kept in pristine condition so you can be assured that your gown is as good as a special order. How do I know what size to order?
Special occasion gown sizes usually differ from regular dress sizes. Our experienced consultants will take your measurements to ensure that your gown will be ordered in the size closest to your measurements. Often, your measurements will fall in between sizes and your approval will be required before we determine what size to order. You will have the opportunity to see how your measurements compare to the designer's size chart, and then select your size.
Although the collections we offer are made to order, they are not custom-made. The majority of all dresses will need to be altered in some way. By taking your measurements, we are simply trying to find a size that will need the least amount of alterations. Depending on the gown silhouette, either the hips measurement (mermaids) or the waist measurements (A-lines) are the most important measurements to match up to the designer’s size chart. Please note that different designers have different measurement charts so it is possible to be a size 8 in one brand and a size 10 in another. Most special occasion materials do not have spandex in them, so the dresses have a more precise fit and will not stretch. In addition, gown sizes tend to run small, so don’t be alarmed when your gown size is not the same as your clothing size. So don't get hung up on the numbers – trust your consultant to suggest the right size gown for you. Will My gown arrive in my length?
Most gowns are designed for a for 5’9” women. If you do not fall in this category, you will need to either order extra length at an additional charge, or have the hem altered once it arrives. Tall ladies, do not fear! Many gowns can be ordered with extra length for an additional charge. For petite women, hemming is an easy solution, and some bridal manufacturers are now offering a ‘petite’ length option as well.
When considering length, please keep in mind that undergarments, crinolines and shoes play a major role! The length of your gown will need to be different depending on how full your crinoline is, or whether you choose 3” heels as opposed to flats. If you have the option of petite length or hollow-to-hem measurements for the bridal gown you order, you’ll need to select both your undergarments and your heel height first before getting measured. Can I get a color swatch of my dress?
Color swatches are available mainly for bridesmaids dresses. If we have extra swatches available in-store, we will gladly give you a swatch of your chosen color once your order has been placed. Unfortunately, we do not have enough swatches to hand out for prospective orders. If we are unable to locate a swatch for you that day, then we will request one from the manufacturer and it will arrive usually within 3 weeks of the request. If you have an ivory dress or a unique contrasting color we will do our best to locate a swatch for you; our designers do not normally supply us with wedding gown or prom gown swatches.
Please understand that these swatches are to be used only as a guide for the colors offered. Colors may vary due to dye lots and different types of fabric. Please use these swatches as a general example, as the actual gown's color may vary from that of the swatch. Because the swatch is not coming from the same bolt of material your dresses will be cut from, we cannot guarantee gown colors to match exactly to the swatches. Dye lot variations do exist. Please use these swatches only as a reference, as they may not represent the final color of the gown. I'm planning on losing weight. How much smaller of a size should I order?
Never buy a smaller size because you intend to lose weight. Generally, alterations cannot increase the size of the gown, they can, however, make a loose gown fit perfectly. If you lose weight it is easy to make your gown fit you perfectly if it was purchased in your previous size. The opposite, letting out a gown if it’s too small because you put on weight, can be far more expensive to do and often it will not look perfect.
Planning a wedding can be a stressful time and it’s a mistake to add more stress because you won’t fit into a dress you ordered too small if you don’t reach your goal weight. Most brides buy their wedding gowns 9 to 18 months before their weddings so that they can facilitate all the other planning and purchases that revolve around the gown. You should do the same even if you are planning to lose weight. Buy the gown that fits your current weight and if you reach your weight goals it will be easy to alter to fit you beautifully. If you don’t, so what! Your gown will still fit beautifully and remember he fell in love with you the way you are, not the way you hope to be. What happens if when the dress arrives it doesn't fit?
As mentioned in the above FAQ, we can only recommend what size to order based on your measurements at the time of purchase. We are not responsible for any fluctuations in weight (including pregnancy) resulting in the dress not fitting. Due to the nature of our business we cannot accept exchanges or returns. It is very important that you get measurements taken and look at the appropriate manufacturers size chart before ordering your dress. However, alterations are almost always necessary for a custom fit so please keep this in mind. It is not unusual for a seamstress to take in or let out dresses 1 to 2 sizes.
How much of a deposit do I need to order a gown?
A Bridal World requests payment in full for the gown at the time of ordering. The order will be placed once the deposit is made.
What forms of payment are accepted?
A Bridal World accepts Cash, Debit, Visa, Master Card and Discover. We do not accept checks. You can also make payments through Paypal; please ask your consultant for details.
Can I pay for my dress over the phone with a credit card?
We are not authorized to accept credit cards directly over the phone, so we use an alternate method. We will send you a form to fill out, either faxed or emailed, which you will fill out and return to us either by faxing or emailing. We will then use this to process your order. This method is for user verification and to avoid credit card fraud. If you have a smart phone, pad or computer handy then we can arrange to accept payment through Paypal.
Why can't I get an exact arrival date instead of an estimated arrival date?
Manufacturers do not guarantee their ship dates since their production can vary. Ship dates are tentative and subject to change. If production at a company is low, the dress may be completed sooner; if they are extremely busy with orders then the dress may be on time or slightly beyond that. Manufacturers provide retailers with an estimated shipping date, which we in turn provide to our clients.
Will I be notified of my order status?
We will contact you once the order is placed to let you know the estimated arrival date. Normally the designer does not contact us as to the status of the dress order; the dress simply ships out when it’s ready. Orders are delivered directly from the designer to our store, and after the gown is checked and passes quality control, we contact you so that you can pick up the dress. For group orders such as bridesmaids, our policy is that we only call the main contact (the bride) to let you know the order has arrived.
Why is there a shipping charge for my order?
Every manufacturer charges for shipping from their location to our store. Some bridal salons add this charge into the gown price so it seems like the shipping is free. A Bridal World offers the lowest price possible on their gowns and adds the shipping charge separately. Our shipping charge is often based on economic factors, such as gasoline prices or the shipping company's rates. For these reasons, a shipping charge may periodically change. Shipping charges vary based on weight. The charge for jewelry may be very low, whereas a much heavier formal wedding gown will cost more. Most gowns average between $10-20 per gown. Please consult with a sales associate if you are concerned about the cost of shipping for a particular gown.
If you do not wish to pay the shipping charge on a particular gown, we always welcome you to purchase one of our beautiful in-stock gowns that are not subject to shipping charges. What is your return or exchange policy?
Due to the special nature of our business, there are no refunds, exchanges or cancellations. There are no exceptions. Any orders that have been placed cannot be cancelled after 24 hours, as the manufacturers will not accept cancellations once the order is placed in the queue.
If the wedding is cancelled, can I get my money back?
We do understand that unfortunate events do happen, but there are no refunds, exchanges or cancellations. There are no exceptions. Once the order is placed with the manufacturer A Bridal World cannot cancel the order, not for any reason. The dress will still be made and will still have to be paid for.
If I order a dress and don't like it when it arrives, can I send it back?
No, there are no refunds, exchanges or cancellations. There are no exceptions. The bridal manufacturer’s policy is also no refunds, exchanges or cancellations, and they will not accept the dress back for any reason.
I saw a dress in the internet that I just wan to try on. Can I do that at your store?
"I see that you carry that line. Do you provide try-on service for that dress manufacturer?"
Unfortunately, the answer is no if you don’t plan on purchasing the gown from us. Although independent bridal stores do carry national brands, each store is independently owned and is there to provide you with gown selections to choose from and purchase. Our manufacturers are actively working to close the accounts of anyone selling on the Internet. IF they close the account, your order will not be filled. If in fact it does arrive, it will arrive in a small box or envelope completely wrinkled. We’ve encountered many brides in tears over what they thought would be their beautiful gown, but got ripped off from an unscrupulous vendor, whether it was bought off eBay, an Internet store, or from China knock-offs.
If a website is showing current photos of designer gowns, with ridiculously low prices compared to authorized vendors, and the English is choppy or broken, then this is most likely a Chinese knock-off website. Beware. If you do purchase a gown from these sites, and the gown actually ships to you, it will not be from the designer, it will be made from inferior, cheap looking materials, and will look only vagely close to the original design. In a recent article in USA Today, it was reported that shoppers were getting a poor deal from Internet retailers. The Consumers International research group ordered 151 items from various Internet sites. It found that one in ten items never arrived. Your wedding gown is too important to take a chance on. We encourage you to store your gown in a zippered dress bag for storage. If storing it for several months before the wedding, you should keep the bag partly unzipped to allow the dress to "breathe" and stay fresh. Keep the gown away from heat, sunlight, moisture and pets. It is best to keep it stored hanging correctly using the interior underarm loops, or lying flat and smooth.
